IGCSE Syllabus

The school follows the IGCSE ( International General Certificate of Secondary Education ) syllabus prescribed by the University of Cambridge, which will develop in students: vital educational skills, including recall of knowledge, oral skills, problem solving, initiative, team-work and investigative skills.

Why International Education ?

Growing international trade and multinational companies mean that many more people are thinking globally.

There is an increasing demand for quality education that is international in nature.

Quality education needs to be supported by prestigious qualifications.

Quality education needs to develop higher level skills.

What is Cambridge International Examinations?

A part of the University of Cambridge - an educational charity
Promoting quality education and training (including teacher training)
Offering international examinations for over 140 years
Cambridge examinations taken in over 160 countries
Providing interesting and stimulating syllabuses with examinations to match - to enhance the     educational environment in schools
Providing assessment services to ministries, organizations, schools and colleges at a reasonable cost.

Why do people want a Cambridge qualification?

Cambridge qualifications require the development of higher skills, such as understanding, problem solving, evaluation and analysis. These ‘higher skills’ are lifelong skills - they are what employers and universities want people to have. Cambridge qualifications are, therefore, highly valued.

The Cambridge provision for schools and colleges

Primary Curriculum Framework (Classes 1-5)

A five-year curriculum which is designed for Classes 1 to 5.
English, Mathematics and Science as main subjects.

Checkpoint (Classes 6-8)

 A three-year curriculum which is designed for Classes 6, 7 and 8.
The aim is to prepare your students to get the best possible IGCSE grades at the end of Class 10.
Tests for English, Mathematics and Science at the end of Class 8

Benefits

It identifies students’ strengths and weaknesses in a subject, individually, as a class, and for the school as a whole.

Students and parents can see where they are doing well and where they should concentrate their effort.

Checkpoint scores can be used to predict IGCSE grades.

Checkpoint can help students get better grades in the future .

IGCSE (Classes 9 & 10)

The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is provided by the University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), one of the world’s leading providers of examinations.

IGCSE is a high profile qualification with an excellent reputation (started in 1988).

It is recognised by universities and institutes of higher education around the world.

It is equivalent in standard to the British GCSE and International GCE O Level examinations .

IGCSE is designed to be taught as a two year course Classes 9 and 10.

Most students take IGCSE examinations at the end of Class 10.

Benefits

IGCSE provides an excellent foundation for higher level courses, including Cambridge A and AS Levels.

Good IGCSE grades count towards entry to universities and colleges around the world.

IGCSE offers students a flexible course of study that gives them the freedom to select the subjects that are right for them.

IGCSE develops higher level skills.

Options are available

Students are encouraged to study at least seven subjects at IGCSE from the following groups

Languages

Mathematics

Sciences

Humanities and Social Sciences

Business, Creative, Technical and Vocational
The course differs for each subject, but throughout there will be a mix of teaching activities, including coursework, practical exercises, projects, oral and listening tests, to develop the full range of skills.
Subjects are graded A* through to G - grade A is awarded for the highest level of achievement and grade G for the lowest

GCE AS ( Advanced Subsidiary ) and A Level ( Advanced ) (class 11 & 12)

This is probably the most prestigious pre-university qualification that a student can get. For over 50 years, A Levels have been accepted for entry to universities and institutes of higher education around the world. Cambridge International A Levels incorporate the best of the UK A Levels, but are designed to meet the needs of international students. Students can study those more specialized combinations of subjects required by engineering and medical colleges.

AS represents the first half of an A Level course - the second half is usually referred to as ‘A2’
A
S Levels allow students to

Follow a two-stage assessment route to A Level by taking the AS Level in one examination session (end of Class 11) and taking the ‘A2 examinations’ in a subsequent session (end of Class 12), thereby completing the A Level. ( AS + A2 = A Level)

Take the AS Level as either a one or two year course in addition to full A Levels in other subjects

What are A and AS Level courses like?

All syllabuses require students to develop problem-solving and analytical skills and the ability to apply knowledge. Studying for A and AS Levels is academically challenging, but offers excellent preparation for the next stage of education - study at university or college

Subjects available

Mathematics, Physics, Business Studies, Chemistry, Economics, Biology, Accounting, Computing, Literature in English, Art & Design, Law, Psychology, Sociology and a variety of Indian Languages

Number of subjects Needed
This depends on where they are going next. The UK universities require two or three A level passes.
Students in Mauritius study three A Level subjects and two AS Level subjects, simultaneously.
We would recommend that a student studies three A Level subjects simultaneously and might also take one or two AS level subjects.

Benefits
Good A and AS Level grades are a key to admission to the world’s best universities and colleges
Good grades at A Level can result in up to one full year of advanced standing or credit at universities in the USA and Canada and they often gain substantial scholarships.
